Approaching Helsinki, a landscape in greyscale
The basis of this assignment was an international idea competition organised by the Municipality of Helsinki, Finland. The main purpose of the competition was to obtain a vision for a new urban development for 5.000 inhabitants and 2.500 workplaces on the island of Koivusaari close to Helsinki. The city region is facing an increase in population and requested a proposal for a more dense urban structure.

The main concept is a framing of Koivusaari with the purpose of sustaining the current landscape features, maritime environment and contours of Koivusaari and the new development is created on new fillings. By doing this, an open space occurs between the existing shore of Koivusaari and the new urban edge.
The future metro station and highway-exit is gathered in an infrastructural and urban core with routes connecting the new development to Koivusaari and the highway.

The surrounding landscape features is picked up on and introduced in the development in the shape of a circle connecting the different parts of the development.
Two spaces are identified and a series of public institutions are placed in these areas with the purpose of generating urban life.
A number of smaller scale spaces is identified on the outer edge of the development. They are kept clear from buildings and serves as openings and views.
