The port of Århus is growing. The container port is located in Nordhavnen, and the progress demands more space for this part of the harbour. As a consequence it is being relocated, and with that, a large area is being released for the building of residential and commercial housing. In 2001 the municipality of Århus wrote out a competition about the planning of Nordhavnen.

koncept

The competition was won by architect Knud Fladeland, and the master plan was the starting point of my project. Three main points fromm the master plan are researched and designed in this project; the three large public spaces, the edge of the quay and the spaces between the houses on the islands.

analyse

The spaces between the houses on islands are connected to each other. The idea is to create see-through spaces. Apart from that, the residents should be able to stay in these spaces. The channels which separate the islands are also corridors for wind, and create turbulence around the corners of the houses.

The solution is some semi-private spaces, with plantings in two levels, and spots for stay. The tall trees relate to the buildings, and the smaller trees and the shrubs frames the spaces for stay. Paths goes trough the green spaces and connect the islands.

idé

When staying in this area, it jumps to your eyes that even though you are surrounded by water, the city of Århus and the port are really close. The different views and the feeling of being on an island make the place special. The views from the area have helped define the edge and access to the water.

The terraced part of the quay is repeated in the shape of a stair, where waves roll up on the lowest steps. Finally there is the artificial beach. A section of the quay in a 5 degree angle makes the slope towards the water moderate.
